Hot Air and Hot Air Balloon

We are still  at the forestry site just outside of Cottonwood Az. The camp host told us yesterday that a group from Phoenix  who camped here on this weekend  every year would be starting to arrive today, and we would be in the middle of their big circle. He said to just join in, but we just moved to another site .

We still get a view overlooking Sedona

Looking toward Cottonwood, Jerome is on the hillside above.

John asked about the location of this site, it is off highway 260 which joins highways 89A and highway 17. From Cottonwood driving towards highway 17 it is about 4.5 mile turn left at Thousand Trails Rd. In about a half mile turn  left  onto gravel road, there is a sign saying fourteen days camping limit.Less than a mile down  the road you will see sites on the left side of the road, there are three large areas with lots of sites. From highway 17 it is about 6 miles to Thousand trails Rd.

We have been staying close to the campground because of the heat. It is just too hot to leave the dogs in the RV  past noon. Yesterday we went out early to look for a cache, we just started geocaching this summer and this was are first cache since we left home.It was pretty well hidden but we found it.

Nice Area

We like this area a lot, Cottonwood is a small town,it’s close to Sedona without the crazy traffic, Jerome is just a short dive away.

The balloon went up by  the campground this morning, Jake and Sophie just stare at it, poor Louie is terrified when he hears the burner.

  1. More good boondocking spots about 10k south of Sedona off 89A on Forest Rd 525 to the north. Just a mile in is the Jct with 761 where there is a large camp area, but I went down 761 just a bit further and camped near the model aircraft flying field. It is also an area where the balloons were landing every morning! Directly across the highway on 89B forest road there are also some spots - perhaps even a bit of shade - if those sites aren't taken. See you down there in a few months!

  3. ooooo I LOVE Gelatos I'll have to put that in my book of places to visit when we're on the road again. We have a Gelato shop just down the road from our house. Good any season of the year.

  4. Looks like a great boondocking spot! I lost a transmission in my truck in 97 going up that hill to Jerome! It is familiar territory. The friend who was with me at the time loved the area so much she moved to Prescott. "preskit"
